#coleporter - Written by the American composer Cole Porter, "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" is one of his many popular songs that are now "standards" in the music repertoire of the 20th century.
Porter's compositions found huge success on Broadway and in Hollywood films from the 1920s to the 1950s. Born in 1891, he was classically trained in music by his mother where he learned violin at the age of 6 and piano at the age of 8. His father was an amateur poet and singer. He acquired and utilized these skills as key factor in his success. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics as well as the music for his songs and shows.
Born to a wealthy family in Peru, Indiana, Porter's wealthy grandfather wished for him to practice law and so he attended Yale, achieved class valedictorian status, then he attended Harvard Law School. At Harvard the dean of the law school recognized his true talents and got him transferred to the graduate school music department to pursue his passion to be a professional composer. His mother approved of this and they conspired to keep this fact secret from his grandfather. Porter was drawn to musical theatre and often went to New York to attend shows and cabarets. After a slow start as a composer, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage.
The life story of Cole Porter is difficult to capsulize here as it is so varied and deep. After so much success, his life did change drastically after a serious horseback riding accident in 1937. Porter was left disabled and in constant pain by the accident, but he continued to work as a composer. His shows of the early 1940s did not contain the lasting hits of his best work of the 1920s and 1930s, but in 1948 he did make a triumphant comeback with his most successful musical, "Kiss Me, Kate." It won the first Tony Award for Best Musical.
Many artists have recorded Porter songs, and some top artists have released entire albums of his best songs. A Cole Porter Festival is held every year in June in his hometown of Peru, Indiana, to foster music and art appreciation. Since Porter's death, except for a brief time at the New York Historical Society, his 1908 Steinway grand piano, which he had used when composing since the mid-1930s, has been displayed, and often played in the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Through his final days in 1964, Porter continued to live in the Waldorf Towers in New York in his memorabilia-filled apartment.
This song has song has such a great melody and smooth jazz vibe. Thank you to Tim Weed who plays the violin melody so nicely on top of my guitar tracks.
