The MSU Campus Archaeology Program, or CAP, is among one of the first programs in the United States to offer an opportunity for students to excavate their own campus. Every other year, CAP runs a five-week-long summer field school, archaeological experience for students to investigate the stories and material culture of historic families who owned property that would later become MSU.
In 2024, students enrolled in the summer field school worked to uncover more of the foundation of MSU’s first observatory, first discovered in summer 2023, as well as artifacts associated with the building. CAP has also partnered with the Abrams Planetarium on MSU’s campus to learn more about the history and evolution of scientific observation
