Seventeen juvenile predator specimens, held in containment, escaped and converged on Veronica, the station florist, offering her stolen objects they believed were "human tribute".

The cubs exhibited pack loyalty and identified Veronica as their pack leader, communicating their needs for correct nutrition through the stolen items.
A security xenopsychologist and the xenopediatric research director eventually realized the cubs were sapient and malnourished due to flawed dietary protocols.

Veronica, using her knowledge of plants, synthesized corrective supplements from materials the cubs had collected, saving a critically ill cub and demonstrating what the entire research team had missed.

The cubs were reclassified as sapient juveniles requiring foster care, and Veronica, promoted to xenopedi foster coordinator, began working with the research director to develop new protocols based on listening to the living subjects.
