In this episode of Colour Chemistry, I explain how mineral and dye pigments ultimate differ in general terms, noting common exceptions, and proceed to make a basic acrylic paint by mixing an impasto gel medium with both a mineral and a dye - I used iron (III) oxide (ferric oxide) as the mineral and rhodamine as the dye. I've included all the products used (below) with links to Amazon and I've also included links to the paints that are the most similar to the results I obtained, in case you like the colours.
Episode 5 explains fluorescence: • Colour Chemistry Episode 5 - Fluorescence ...
Episode 2 explains the paint Opera Rose, which uses rhodamine as a binder-dye:

Colour Chemistry is my new series for watercolourists focusing on how our pigments, paints and mediums actually work - the detail of how different pigments are made, how they interact and what their limits are. You will learn how to make beautiful mixes without so much guess work and you'll learn how to get a particular effect straight off the bat - because you'll understand the theory, you'll be able to adapt things to your own end much more easily.
You don't need to know ANY chemistry as a background to this - I've kept these videos pretty short, pretty 'light' on fine detail and I've skipped over everything except what you as a watercolourist could really benefit from knowing.
If you have questions or comments PLEASE ask away - I love answering your questions as you know and I'm more than happy to help people of all levels.
