We start today’s 12 mile walk in Coniston and explore the route to Langdale Valley. Working our way into the fells with Coniston Water behind us we soon find our way up to the first point of interest for the day, the impressive Tarn How’s
Working our way along its banks we start to descend once again to meet the road and cross to find our way through the woods and discover the stunning waterfalls.

As we get to Skelwith Bridge just in time for lunch at the cafe there is chance to sample the vegetarian delights on offer. This rest point is around the halfway mark for this section of the Cumbria Way as an excellent point for a break.

Starting off again, we are soon at Elter Water and then we follow its banks to Elterwater village, a quaint lakeland village.

Continuing to The Wainwrights pub we stop for refreshments before moving past Chapel Style and into the Langdale Valley. Chapel Style has a village shop and is a good opportunity to restock supplies for the next day.

After a small up and down the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is in site. We head toward it and take the final path to the Old Dungeon Ghyll where we rest for the evening.

For multi day thru hikes this is the most iconic and best walk in the lake district capturing some of the best scenery in the lakes on 5 very different days from the rolling hills of Cumbria before carrying out three days walking in the Lake District national park. On the route you will visit lakeland villages of Coniston before passing through the Langdale Valley on the way to Keswick. Exiting the lake district National park at Caldbeck before finishing day 5 in the contested border town of Carlisle which has been claimed as part of England and Scotland over the decades in fierce battles.
