Hi Emily here :) once again myself and the TLA Advanced steelband were chosen to perform at the National Festival final in the Birmingham Symphony hall.
This year we performed the Bolero (part 1) and Mas Que Nada (part 2). These two pieces were particularly challenging for us, as the Bolero is written in a 3/4 time signature which we have never played in before. Specifically for the tenor and double second players getting the phrasing and timings accurate took the most work.
Similarly with Mas Que nada, the rhythm sections had complicated rhythms, with counter melodies all the way through, with it being a Latin piece us rhythm players found the timings complicated, as Latin is a style with many syncopated notes and rhythms, also with such a large ensemble (consisting of 29 players) keeping the rhythms clean and accurate again needed the most work. But we finally got there in the end. Well don guys :)
After months of preparing with many moments at rehearsal being intense and sometimes stressful. I think that we did an amazing job and pulled the two pieces off in a confident style when it came to the performance.
