Ron McCrory was born in Waynesboro, Tennessee, in 1949. He was drafted into the Army in 1969, trained to work with mortars, and went to Vietnam in November of that year. He was assigned to the mortar platoon of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division. From April through July of 1970, his platoon was based and Fire Support Base Ripcord, but during most of that time, his section served in the field with different line companies, only moving to the firebase shortly before it was evacuated on July 23. He returned to the US in October, and completed his enlistment with the 4th Infantry Division in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was discharged in October 1971.
