Today, 75 years after the liberation of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, Theresienstadt's Requiem would be performed at the Beurs van Berlage. The concert drama was written by conductor Murry Sidlin and tells the story of conductor Rafael Schächter and his choir members in the concentration camp. The camp prisoners experienced singing Verdi's Requiem, a Catholic mass of the dead, as an act of resistance towards the Nazis. Because of the transports, Schächter had to reconstitute his choir twice. The drama is an indictment of the persecution of the Jews, and at the same time it shows how music expresses, and contributes to, spiritual freedom and resilience.
Due to the corona crisis, the concert drama has been postponed to next year. It will therefore be performed at the Beurs van Berlage in 2021.
