This is a Christian passion hymn that is based on a Latin text written during the Middle Ages. The hymn whose text is derived from John 19:2 is attributed to Bernard of Claivaux 1091-1153. The melody was composed by Hans Leo Hassler in 1601 while the harmony was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach 1729. It was later translated to English by James Waddell Alexander in 1830
