Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control is widely used to regulate variables such as flow, temperature, pressure, etc., in continuous processes. As physical systems evolve, PID controllers need to be re-tuned, creating an ongoing challenge. PID tuning is often treated as art, rather than science, and the "Guess & Check" tuning method is very common. Each iteration takes valuable time, disrupts the process, and results depend heavily on the tuner's intuition. This webinar introduces "Model-Based Tuning" as an alternative, which focuses first on understanding the system, then using that knowledge to derive tuning values. A simple, broadly effective, PID tuning procedure is presented, with a basic explanation of underlying theory. The concept is put to work with a live example, using software to quickly model a process and tune a PID loop.
