It's the end of the freight hauling line for C&C engine #102 and a sad day for railfans. The EMD GP7 was delivered new to the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in August 1952, and they rebuilt it in December 1979. It was retired by CNW in 1992 and was operated by (CAGY Industries) on the Chattooga & Chickamauga railway starting in the mid-1990s.
CAGY was bought out by Genesee & Wyoming in mid-2008. In 2011, the orange, yellow, and black G&W livery made its debut on the C&C with the arrival of the rebuilt/repainted #1804, making the #102 the lone active blue and grey holdout.
A couple of weeks ago I talked with Tom Foden, who is the 102's Engineer here, and he told me that it wouldn't be active much longer as they were awaiting the arrival of its replacement. I had a gut feeling that I'd better drive to Lafayette on Friday, and I finally found it about 5 miles outside of town, coming in from its last job. The C&C loses an old workhorse in the 102, but gains a nice looking, newly rebuilt GP9 in the #1700.
For now, the 102 can still be seen in the C&C yard, but at some point it will be gone for good to provide some parts for other engines and to meet the torch.
