9. SOUNDBITE (English) Archbishop Aris Shirvanian, Ecumenical and Foreign Relations Director at the Jerusalem Armenian Patriarchate:
"It is very important that Israel recognise the Armenian genocide because, we the Armenians and the Jewish people have suffered the same fate and the Armenian genocide has served as a predecessor to the Jewish Holocaust by having Hitler plan to annihilate six million Jews, so Israel should have been actually one of the first countries to support and recognise the Armenian genocide, but due to its political and military and economic considerations as allies with Turkey, so far Israel has refrained from taking that official step."

"This is a landmark also that we actually upgrade our attitude towards the history of the Armenians, and what I suggested is just to recognise it was a genocide, but I'm not in a position to carry that message I hope very much that the government of Israel, the sooner the better, will look at this series of tragedies and will change the policy and will just give it the right name which is genocide."

STORYLINE
There are growing calls in Israel for the country to call the mass killings of Armenians during World War I a genocide.
In the first gesture of its kind, Israel is dispatching a pair of lawmakers to this week's remembrance ceremony in Yerevan to convey the Jewish state's sympathies.
