7 Days Hiking In The Alaskan Coast - Haines, Skagway & Wildcamping

After wrapping up an incredible few days at Kathleen Lake, we hit the road toward Haines, Alaska—one of the most scenic drives of my life, visiting Rock Glacier Trail on the way. With moody skies and dramatic mountains, the journey alone was breathtaking. We learned about the region’s rich history while soaking in the beauty of the Yukon and Alaskan wilderness.

Once in Haines, we explored Chilkat State Park and Chilkoot Lake State Park, spending the night in a cozy campground surrounded by lush forest and towering peaks. The next morning, the skies cleared and we boarded the Alaska Marine Highway ferry for a stunning ride from Haines to Skagway, with views stretching into Glacier Bay National Park and beyond. Skagway was an amazing surprise—this historic Gold Rush town is now a vibrant cruise port filled with charm and character. I hiked to AB Mountain, one of the most scenic trails in the area, and got an epic view overlooking the entire Skagway area.

We checked out the historic Gold Rush Cemetery and nearby waterfalls before heading up to White Pass, a dramatic, otherworldly drive filled with snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes. From there, we re-entered Yukon and British Columbia, stopping to admire Tutshi and Tagish Lakes, and found one of the most beautiful campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at—Conrad Campground, Yukon’s newest spot right on the lake. The next morning, we explored the lakeshore trails and took in the epic views before continuing to Carcross Desert, the world’s smallest desert, and finally crossed the Miles Canyon Suspension Bridge in Whitehorse. This trip was a perfect mix of adventure, history, and unreal landscapes.
