Appartiene alla famiglia Characidae e deriva dall' america del sud come Rio delle Amazzoni e dai fiumi della Guyana. Il corpo è molto alto e compresso lateralmente, le squame sono piccole, il colore varia a seconda della specie, dal verde con sfumature rossicce al nero, fino a toni argentati e dorati, presenta una colorazione che va dal rosso all arancione sul ventre e nella zona delle branchie, che cambia a seconda dell alimentazione. É Rapido e ha muscoli potenti, può spostarsi molto velocemente, è molto aggressivo, ma allo stesso tempo timido, quindi scattoso e un po schivo. La caratteristica più distintiva della specie è la bocca, simile ad una tagliola; la mascella inferiore è dotata di una fila di grandi denti triangolari, molto affilati che coincidono con quelli nella mascella superiore. Non è indicato per acquari allestiti, piantumati o curati nei dettagli poiché sposterà gli arredi, mangierà le piante e gli altri “conquilini”. E' un pesce da branco, in natura vive in branchi anche superiori ai 100 esemplari e in teoria dovrebbe convivere con 4/5 esemplari in acquario, si consiglia di mantenere il rapporto 100 litri circa per ogni esemplare. Gli unici pesci compatibili sono altre specie di pirana erbivori oppure Arowana o black bass ovviamente in grandissimi acquari. Non attacca l uomo se non per difesa quando si sente minacciato, non c è dimorfismo sessuale tra maschi e femmine. Sono pesci onnivori ma principalmente carnivori, si nutrono di invertebrati acquatici, piccoli pesci come guppy, anfibi, pezzi di carne di carogne di animali morti in acqua. Anche se ama carne di manzo, cuore fegato, si consiglia di non somministrarle per la probabilità di presenza batterica. È consigliato quindi il secco sottoforma di granuli o stick.
