This video demonstrates how to use a bottle cap torque tester to determine the amount of torque you are applying to your caps. The Method of Test for Closure Torque is the procedure we follow to achieve this goal. This procedure is the industry standard used by the producers of caps and bottles as well companies that package bottled products. Producers follow this test procedure during their product development phase to determine the application torque specification for a particular cap and bottle. Companies that package bottled products follow this procedure to verify that they are tightening their caps with the amount of torque necessary for proper closure.

The amount of torque that is used to tighten a cap onto a container is referred to as application torque. The torque required to unscrew a cap from a bottle is referred to as removal torque or release torque. Your cap and bottle supplier should be able to provide you with the application torque specification for your cap. Application torque specifications are expressed as a range. For example, the specified application torque range for the cap and bottle we use in the video is 13-17 inch pounds.

Bottle cap torque testers are used to determine the correlation between the application torque and the removal torque of a cap. After the correlation has been established, cap torque testers are used to validate that the capping machine is applying the correct amount of torque onto the cap.
