Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores - Plot Summary
The Burning Shores DLC takes place immediately after the main quest of Horizon Forbidden West. It focuses on Aloy's journey to the volcanic archipelago that was once Los Angeles.
1. The Setup: The Thirteenth Zenith
Following the defeat of the Far Zeniths at Singularity, Sylens informs Aloy that one member of the group is still unaccounted for: Walter Londra. Unlike the other Zeniths who were focused on immortality and power, Londra was an aerospace mogul and celebrity who has fled to the "Burning Shores" to pursue a mysterious contingency plan.
2. Arrival and Seyka
Upon arriving, Aloy's Sunwing is brought down by a massive Zenith defense tower. She meets Seyka, a marine from the Quen tribe whose expedition has been shipwrecked in the ruins of LA. Seyka is a "rogue" much like Aloy, searching for her missing sister and missing tribespeople. The two form a deep bond, marking the first time Aloy finds a true peer in terms of skill and temperament.
3. Walter Londra’s Plan
Aloy and Seyka discover that Londra has established himself as a "god" to a group of fanatical Quen. He is using them to excavate a derelict Horus (a Titan-class Metal Devil).
Londra’s ultimate goal is to build a new spaceship to leave Earth, but his method is horrific. The ship’s engine uses a specialized "Nova" DNA scanner that requires human biological material. He intends to kidnap his most "loyal" followers, brainwash them into a digital "ascension," and use their genetic data to fuel his escape, leaving the rest of the planet to burn in the radiation wake of the launch.
4. The Ascension Hall
Aloy and Seyka infiltrate Londra's headquarters at "Starlight Rise." They find evidence of Londra's narcissism—he has been recreating his "perfect life" from the 21st century and trying to "breed" a new version of his deceased wife using Quen women. They rescue Seyka’s sister, Kina, from the brainwashing process, breaking Londra’s hold over the tribe.
5. The Climax: Awakening the Horus
In a desperate final move, Londra retreats to the massive Horus machine. Using Zenith technology, he manages to restart the Horus, something previously thought impossible.
The final battle is a multi-stage cinematic spectacle:
The Approach: Aloy and Seyka must disable the Horus's cooling systems while dodging its massive tentacles.
The Climb: Aloy scales the moving Titan to reach the heat sinks.
The Core: Aloy breaches the interior of the Horus to confront Londra directly.
Aloy kills Londra, ending the Zenith threat once and for all. She recovers his focus, which contains data regarding a way to defeat NEMESIS—the coming AI threat.
6. The Conclusion
The story ends with a quiet moment between Aloy and Seyka. Depending on player choice, Aloy can enter into a romantic relationship with Seyka, marking a significant step in Aloy's emotional growth and her willingness to let people into her life.
Back at the Base, Aloy meets with Sylens (in a poignant final performance by the late Lance Reddick), where they prepare for the inevitable arrival of Nemesis using the data recovered from Londra’s ruins.
