I've been making lots of these vases lately. A process of that involves throwing a bulbous form before sectioning it off into its angular shape. This stoneware clay does contain some grog, a light particulate that fills the body and gives it just a bit of tooth when throwing with, it also, thankfully, makes it much easier to lift off the wheel at the end.
I sometimes get asked whether I wait before lifting the pots off the wheel and the answer is typically no, I simply dry off the outer surface of the area I’ll be lifting from with a metal kidney and I’ll do the same to my hands, scraping the slip off them against the sharp edge of a plastic bucket that sits next to me collecting reclaim. Then I clasp lightly, making contact rather than squeezing, then I spin the wheel and lift in the exact same moment. That’s all there is to it really but like all the processes involved in making pottery it requires a smidgin of practice.
Thanks for watching!
