Becoming your LOCAL Suburban Photographer

I was browsing around my local area on Google Maps (Jerry doesn’t get out much these days), and I stumbled across a local photographer named Tony Maston. He was active from the 1930s through to the 1990s and took a huge number of photos around Merrylands and Prospect. Turns out, someone even interviewed him later in life, which was a great find.

It really got me thinking about my own photography and the value of capturing everyday life - how important it is to document the places and people around us. These days, everyone’s uploading location shots to Google Maps and leaving reviews, but most of those photos are fleeting - quick snaps with no context or story behind them.

If Google is going to be the repository of our era then might as well try to take the best photos we can. I am also saving old footage and scanning them before they end up in landfill. I guess I have become your local average historian now...
