With chronic kidney disease, the kidneys don’t ordinarily lose function all at once. Instead, kidney disease often progresses slowly over the course of years and different stages. If caught early, medicines and lifestyle changes may help slow or prevent CKD progression. That is why it is important to get a jump on kidney disease treatment at the beginning signs of chronic kidney disease.

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) divides chronic kidney disease into five stages. This helps nephrologists give the most appropriate treatment, because each stage calls for different tests and treatments.

Doctors determine the stage of kidney disease using the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), a math formula using a person's age, gender, and their serum creatinine level (identified through a blood test). Creatinine, a waste product that comes from muscle activity, is a key indicator of kidney function. In this video, we use GFR as a guideline to follow to determine which stage of kidney disease you are in. When kidneys are working well they withdraw creatinine from the blood; but as kidney function slows, blood levels of creatinine rise.

Another way to look at GFR is as follows: Completely healthy kidney function is measured at a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of around 100, which means that the kidneys are working at 100 percent. Kidney function is still considered to be within normal range if the GFR number is 90 or greater. However, If your GFR drops 45, you know that your kidneys are working at approximately 45 percent of the normal rate, and this could mean you have kidney failure.
