Hal Hartley (born November 3, 1959) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer composer, who became a key figure in the American independent film movement of the 1980s and 1990s. Two of his earlier films as they were released were Simple Men (1992) and Trust (1990). The latter was released before Trust could find a distributor. Hartley frequently scored his own films using his pseudonym Ned Rifle.
