John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) was born on September 6. The main facts of his biography boil down to several turns in life. His parents saw him as a clerk. He went against their will. First, he married his cousin at the age of 20. And then he quit his promising job, from the point of view of his relatives, and took up painting seriously. After 10 years of self-improvement, he became extremely popular. Even the guru of those years, Whistler, having become acquainted with Grimshaw's work, wrote that he invented the nocturne in painting before him. The most popular works were those depicting urban landscapes, filled with the pale light of the moon - "moon nocturnes". He painted a huge number of them, and in addition, he made copies of especially popular works. But Grimshaw painted not only landscapes, but also portraits, interiors, fairy fairies and neoclassical subjects. Naturally, he was rich and allowed himself large expenses. John Atkinson Grimshaw died at the age of 57, in the same place where he was born - in Leeds. His work was forgotten until the end of the 20th century. Let us remember him by the moonlight...
