Did you know that George Washington took the Oath of Office in New York City? Constitutional guidelines for Inaugurations are sparse, offering only the date and the words of the oath. All else is driven by tradition. After the oath is administered, the president gives an address, usually one stressing national unity. Inaugural events have become more elaborate over the years, including parades, which have evolved into spectacular entertainments. But it all began at Federal Hall on April 30, 1789.
In this lecture, Thomas Balcerski will speak about New York City as the capital of the nation, beginning in 1785 under the Articles of Confederation Congress. Despite debates over whether the capital should be relocated, the first Congress determined to meet there in March 1789. The first Inauguration of an American president happened there on April 30, 1789, when George Washington took the Oath of Office. Balcerski reviews the many sites associated with the early capital, between 1785 and 1790, and considers their significance to later developments in the new government. He also discusses how the legacy of this important history has been largely forgotten today.
Joe Faykosh, host of the popular podcast "Visiting the Presidents," moderates. Watch this episode in honor of the first Inauguration!
