Hans von Blow, himself a famous pianist and conductor, once said of Wilhelm Wieprecht (1802–1872) that he was the l'état c'est moi of Prussian military music. This old phrase of Louis XIV was an apt one, for Wieprecht certainly personified the growth and development of military music in Germany during the first half of the nineteenth century. In his desire to improve the repertoire of the military band, he composed a large number of original compositions, not to mention numerous arrangements, for his concerts in Berlin. Wieprecht also developed band performances of great musicality, as Berlioz testified to in his autobiography. Berlioz was also astonished at the numerous available musicians and in hearing skills which could not be found in France. These are, wrote Berlioz, regiments of musicians, not musicians of the regiments!
In his autobiography Berlioz also recalled a military band concert he heard in Berlin in 1843 conducted by Wieprecht, and included a testimonial of high praise for this composition:
"The concert ended with a very fine and well-written funeral march, composed by Wieprecht, and played with only one rehearsal!!"
Wieprecht scored this work for a large Infantry band of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
