Tsuken Sunakake no Kon (or 津堅砂掛けの棍 in Japanese) is a Ryukyu Kobujutsu Bo Kata. The prefix of this Kata’s name refers to the island of Tsuken (or 津堅 in Japanese), southeast of Okinawa’s main island. Next, ‘suna-kake’ (or 砂 掛け in Japanese) means to shovel and cast sand. It is performed with a special type of Bo (or staff), namely a traditional Okinawan wooden oar or Eiku ( エイク ) in Japanese. This Tsuken Sunakake Kata performed with an Eiku can be viewed here :

In this video (recorded on 28 November 2025), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national champion from the Netherlands, performs the Bunkai of this Tsuken Sunakake Kata of Ryukyu Kobujutsu ( 琉球古武術 ). Bunkai (or 分解 in Japanese) literally means ‘analysis’ or ‘disassembly’. In a Bunkai the Kata is broken down and studied for its offensive and defensive elements. For more information, go to :
