Aslam Mirza, owner of Calico Printing Press in Lahore, recounts the history of calico printing in his family. It was initiated by his great grandfather Jhandoo who was a teacher before Partition at the National College of Arts, formerly The Mayo School of Arts. He reflects on the influence of legacy and the evolution in his craft practices.
About the Project:
Husn-e-Hunar: beauty of a craft, is an archival project documenting traditional crafts that are frequently threatened by climate change, violence, and economic instability as tangible, living heritage. Conducting oral history interviews of exceptional artisans specialising in crafts such as Fresco, Mosaic, and Carpet Weaving, the project addresses gaps in the underprivileged field of craft history while preserving authentic narratives. The initiative sheds light on the enduring traditions of craftsmanship in South Asia and the invaluable, endangered knowledge passed down through generations.
