A unique ride on Japan’s small fish-themed train

I spent a day exploring the Nankai Kada Line in Wakayama, Japan. This short spur line runs between Wakayama-shi and Kada stations on a somewhat dingy, rural part of coastal Wakayama. The Kada line has been re-imagined in recent years as a "sakana" (fish) line, with decorations inside and outside the trains to match. Besides that, the cars have different colors and names, and a back story explaining their lives together.

I rode between some of the stations on the Kada Line, and walked between others. I found some attractive but inert neighborhoods, still-maintained but slowly decaying buildings, a lovely and empty beach, and a welcoming, attractive small-town vibe in this obscure corner of the Kansai region.
