Eric Brennan (USDA-Agricultural Research Service) and Karen McKee (The Scientist Videographer) talk about DIY science videos. In this series, they answer questions that science professionals may have about making videos to share information about themselves and their research. This video series was inspired by a paper Eric published in Frontiers in Communication: “Why Should Scientists Be On YouTube? It’s All About Bamboo, Oil and Ice Cream”: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/...
This is the third video in the series and focuses on the question of how scientists are using video in their research, teaching, and outreach. Some of the topics we discuss are:
00:00 Intro
00:32 Use video to demonstrate a technique or experimental protocol.
05:09 Post an unlisted video on YouTube to share a method with students or colleagues.
05:43 Film an experimental subject such as an animal.
06:55 Make a video to advertise a paper.
07:53 Submit a video as online supplemental material for a journal article.
08:53 Use video in a grant proposal to show the broader impacts of your research.
09:44 Create a video to show at a conference or a meeting with colleagues.
11:27 Make a video resume.
12:33 Use video to attract prospective students.
