Bases Loaded (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Jaleco's 1990 baseball game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Bases Loaded.

Played through a single, 9-inning game in USA mode.

Bases Loaded was a real phenomenon when it came out on the NES. It was to baseball as Tecmo Bowl was to football - it seemed like everybody had a copy of it back when I was a kid swapping games back and forth. And, even though I never liked it as much as Dusty Diamond or Base Wars, the graphics were great and it was fun in two-player mode.

If you've played the NES game, you might find yourself wondering why this looks like any standard baseball game instead of Bases Loaded. The reason is that the games are in no way related to each other. In Japan, Bases Loaded was part of Jaleco's Moeru!! series (along with Goal!, Hoops, and a few others), whereas the Game Boy Bases Loaded was a game called Baseball Kids. Both games were developed by TOSE, but the GB version ditches most of the novelties of the NES game for something that closely resembles Nintendo's own 1989 game (the imaginatively named 'Baseball') on the Game Boy. It's far more traditional in its gameplay than the Moeru!! baseball titles, that's for sure.

So, while it lacks the neat TV camera perspective and charging the mound, it's quite a simple but solid baseball game. Like I said, it plays like a clone of Baseball, but that's not a bad thing. It's not as nice to look at as Nintendo's game is, but everything is clear and readable, the controls are sharp, and the music is pretty catchy and good at staying low-key (well, except for the chanting/banging noise - it reminds me of a toilet flushing), and it's all generally a good bit of fun. I'd certainly recommend picking it up on the cheap.

As goofy as it sounds now, as a kid I used to imagine that the cheerleaders holding up the "Go East" signs had beef with the Pet Shop Boys and were publicly throwing down the proverbial gauntlet. I suppose even as a child I had a habit of forming the strangest associations, but whatever. The thought used to make me laugh. Still does, actually.
