DKA vs HHS — NCLEX Quick Difference 👇
DKA = no insulin → fat breakdown → ketones + metabolic acidosis
▪️ Fast onset
▪️ Type 1
▪️ Fruity breath, Kussmaul respirations
HHS = some insulin → no ketones → extreme hyperglycemia + dehydration
▪️ Slow onset
▪️ Type 2
▪️ Altered mental status
🧠 NCLEX tip:
Fruity breath = DKA
Very high glucose + neuro changes = HHS
First priority for BOTH → IV fluids 💧
