The very fine Museum of the Fur Trade is located three miles east of Chadron, Nebraska on US Hwy 20 “in the Land of Crazy Horse” as their brochure declares.
The fur trade has often been called the first business in North America. The museum displays the entire range of goods traded to Indians, the largest and most complete collection of Northwest Guns made for the Indian trade, and textiles, costumes, beads, paints, kettles, knives and silver and on and on.
The museum is well organized:
The Steerman Firearms Hall is the first stop: the Northwest gun, Kentuckies, Hawken rifles, buffalo guns and many more.
The Main Exhibit Hall focuses on the history of the fur trade.
The Lindeken Exhibit Hall commemorates the “Voyageurs”, the canoe men who moved the fur trade goods and furs across the continent.
The Bevin B. and Maxine Bump Exhibit Hall features the most comprehensive collection of textiles traded to American Indians in the world.
Allow yourself plenty of time to progress through the exhibit halls. The collections are amazing, fascinating, thorough, and extensive.
The museum grounds include reproductions of the trading house and warehouse built on Bordeaux Creek in 1837, erected on the exact location of the original trading post. The post belonged to the American Fur Company until 1849. Then Missouri Frenchman James Bordeaux operated it independently for the Sioux until 1872. He was known as “the Bear” by the Sioux customers. Francis Boucher ran the post until 1876, when soldiers from Camp Robinson closed it down for selling ammunition to the Indians.
The grounds also feature a robe press, which was used to create bundles of ten buffalo robes at a time.
