What These Tokyo Protests Mean If You’re HAFU, Foreign, or Raising Kids Here
Hi, Steve here from Divorcing Japan.
There’s been a lot of noise online recently about protests in Japan, rising nationalism, and comments by PM Takaichi about China and Taiwan. For many foreigners, HAFU families, and long-term residents, it’s easy to feel anxious — especially when social media is amplifying footage that isn’t coming from Japanese media.
In this video, I break down what’s actually happening, why Japanese people took to the streets, and how much of what we’re seeing online may be being blown up by outside media — especially China-based channels.
I also look at how parties like Sanseito use social media to push fear-based narratives that affect how foreigners perceive Japan, and why daily life here remains calm, normal, and safe.
As a HAFU father raising kids in Japan, I share my honest worries — but also why I still believe Japan doesn’t change overnight, Japan and China don’t want war, and why we shouldn’t let sensationalism online steal our peace.
We’ll talk about:
• What sparked the protests
• Why Japanese media is quiet
• How foreign media amplifies the situation
• Visa changes making families nervous
• Rising nationalism vs everyday reality
• Why we shouldn’t panic
• Keeping life stable for our kids here
• Staying grounded in a rapidly shifting online environment
I’m not here to attack Japan or anyone else — just to give a balanced, calm perspective as someone who loves this country, is raising children here, and is living through divorce and real-world visa fears like many of you.
