Shownotes:
Color Mixing
I wasn't able to do a lot of mixing because I wasn't looking to create a mixing set, but a highlighter set. Could do some, though colors mixed fairly easily and result in fairly brilliant mixes. I would not recommend mixing too many colors (like, not more than 2)
Pass Compared to PWC:
Some color differences between the two lines, but I had a limited basis for comparison. Lemon Yellow is strikingly different. Shell pink is a bit different. Blue-grey is a bit warmer in the Pass. More opaque in general than the PWC watercolors. It might be nice to compare more PWC colors to Pass at some point.
Lift Test:
All fairly reworkable and lifting, as to be expected with a gouache product designed for reworkability.
Pass Compared to Gouache:
I think traditional gouache has a bit more coverage as compared to Pass. I believe James Gurney sometimes uses gouache as watercolor for a more opaque watercolor?
Wet into Wet Test (?):
These were really fun for wet into wet- they reactivated quickly, dissolved easily into water, and many of them offer a nice bit of granulation on cottonrag watercolor paper.
On ‘black’ watercolor paper:
Sometimes it takes a couple layers to get it saturated enough, but it handles enough like gouache, and has enough opacity, that I think it works well as a ‘pass’ medium. This would be a good medium ground for me- someone who might want to use something with a bit more opacity to add highlights and details on a comic page, but doesn’t necessarily need a set of gouache, or it might work well for someone who is interested in both watercolor and gouache, but only wants to invest in one.
I should have used a stiffer brush for this. Mostly because my gouache got blobby and not precise
Might be neat to do a building up opacity gouache, like reverse delft blue on black.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
Bright, saturated color
Fairly opaque- holds up well on white or color paper
Handles decently as a watercolor- good granulation, diffuses nicely into water- no weird halos colors diffuse into each other cleanly
Cons:
Depending on your art stores, these can be difficult to get ahold of if you’re shopping brick and mortar. I’ve never seen these sold in any of the art stores I frequent- from local brick-and-mortar stores to chain stores like Blick or Michaels- but that doesn’t mean you won’t. And you can request local stores carry supplies you’re interested in-; many are happy to take your requests.
Honestly, these aren’t REALLY gouache OR watercolor; they’re a strange in-between that sorta works for both. I wouldn’t suggest you press Pass to do the same job as the best watercolor or the best gouache, but they’re definitely a good in-between.
LOL lightfastness. Definitely not for sale or display
The Verdict:
I really like these. As a watercolor artist who might sometimes want to play with gouache and who enjoys adding some opacity to my work as highlights, details, and rim lighting, these offer a great in between that have a lot of flexibility. I’m not looking to replace my regular watercolors with these, nor am I particularly interested in getting into gouache, so my expectations may differ. I think these could be a great option for someone interested in both watercolor and gouache and doesn’t yet have much in the way of either.
