Boss Metal Zone - Worst Pedal Ever? Usable only as a Preamp?

The infamous Boss MT-2 Metal Zone used to be by far the most hated distortion pedal on the market, until the trend came out on YouTube of using the MT-2 as a preamp instead of a distortion pedal in front of the amp.
Myself personally, I have used and liked this pedal all along, and disregarded all hate towards the pedal as laziness, lack of competence or conformation to whatever the current trend is - the latter corroborated by the fact that after the "MT-2 as a preamp" hype started to settle in, more and more people are taking the pedal seriously.
Well, today we take a look at the Metal Zone as a distortion pedal, I'll give you my opinion on the unit, we will go through some clips that I recorded with the pedal and we will take a look at some professional albums that use the Metal Zone as an ingredient for the guitar sound.
