The Clan Jetties of Penang are unique, historic Chinese water villages built on wooden stilts extending out over the sea along Weld Quay in George Town. Established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Chinese Hokkien immigrants from Fujian province, each jetty was traditionally settled by people sharing a common surname or "clan," such as the Chew, Lim, Tan, Lee, and Yeoh clans.
These settlements were originally built to house laborers, boatmen, and traders, allowing them to live close to their maritime work. They function as tight-knit communities, preserving traditional customs and featuring temples at the entrance or end of the piers. The jetties remain as living heritage sites, and the most famous and tourist-friendly is Chew Jetty. Since George Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the remaining jetties have gained protection and become a major cultural attraction.
