In this episode of Marginalized Notes, we’re joined by Dr. Arpan Roy, a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin. With a PhD in Anthropology from Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Roy shares his deep insights into difference, religion, and non-Western epistemologies, with a particular focus on Palestine and Jordan.
Dr. Roy is the author of the upcoming book Relative Strangers: Romani Kinship and Palestinian Difference, set to be published in October 2024 by the University of Toronto Press. He’s also the co-editor of Naseej / نسيج, a multidisciplinary volume on plurality in Palestine, due out in 2025.
In our conversation, we explore:
What the Global South really means, why it’s often sidelined in research, and why that needs to change.
The critical role social sciences play in understanding Palestine.
Why we need to rethink terms like “minorities” in academic and public discourse.
The importance of incorporating non-Western epistemologies into mainstream discussions.
Join us for a thought-provoking discussion that challenges the status quo and offers fresh perspectives on these crucial topics.
