KHUMAR BARABANKVI
Urdu ghazal has travelled through centuries on countless tongues, yet only a handful of poets have turned their own losses into luminous verse and shaped their speech into strings of pearls. Among the last quiet flames in this long chandelier of melody stood Muhammad Haider Khan “Khumar” Barabankvi — a voice that kept the old lamp of tarannum glowing till the spring of 1999. Born in Barabanki, a town whose cultured air echoes with Lucknow’s elegance, Khumar grew up amid mushairas and literary gatherings, first as a gifted child reciting in local circles and later as a celebrated presence on grand stages. His voice — warm, stirring, made for passion — carried the classical ghazal with a tenderness he inherited from his mentor, Jigar Muradabadi. After choosing the ghazal as the most faithful vessel for his feelings, he remained devoted to it all his life, whether writing for films in Bombay or enchanting audiences across the country. Simple in manner, gentle in speech, and marked by a life of early indulgence and later repentance, Khumar left behind three collections — Atish-e-Tar, Raqs-e-Mai, and Shab Tab — and a name that still glows softly in the long tradition of Urdu’s most beloved art.

Full Text of the Urdu Ghazal in Roman Transliteration:
Gham-e-dunya ne hamein jab kabhi naashaad kiya
Aye gham-e-dost tujhe hum ne bahut yaad kiya
Husn-e-masoom ko aamaada-e-bedaad kiya
Mujh ko khud meri tamannaon ne barbaad kiya
Ashk beh beh ke mere khaak par jab girne lage
Main ne tujh ko tere daaman ko bahut yaad kiya
Qaid rakha hamein sayyaad ne keh keh ke yahi
Abhi aazaad kiya bas abhi aazaad kiya
Phir gayeen nazron mein aansu-bhari aankhein un ki
Jab kabhi gham ne mujhe maayel-e-faryaad kiya
Haaye woh dil mujhe us dil pe taras aata hai
Tu ne barbaad kiya jis ko na aabaad kiya
Aah woh khaatir-e-naazuk na ho maghmoom kahin
Hichkiyaan kehti hain aaj us ne mujhe yaad kiya
Tujh ko barbaad to hona tha baharhaal Khumaar
Naaz kar naaz ke us ne tujhe barbaad kiya
