CSX #69 Fiercely Leads a Troubled L303-03 in Grand Rapids, MI 06/03/22

On a sunny June 3rd, 2022, I was on waiting for the monstrous L303-03 to appear out of the yard. After hearing L303-03 was on duty around 11am, thanks to Bangor Moderator Tom Y for posting their job briefing, it appears this was one of the heaviest L303 set to run.

I arrived at Century Ave, mp CG 151.450, around 12:30 ish. I couldn't remember honestly but I do remember it was a little over an hour before L303-03 finally starts moving. Between the time they briefed at 11:13 am to 13:30 (1:30pm), a lot of events happened.

First, they had a VERY HEAVY TRAIN LOAD, to begin with. Around 1:10pm, they called an emergency, saying their train had pulled apart. So, they had to get a 3rd engine to inspect the entire train from front to back, trying to see where they pulled apart. Around 1:30pm, they fixed the pull apart and commenced pulling east. At 1:42pm, they finally appeared at mp CG 151.45 Century ave with a very rough sluggish speed.

L303-03 @ 11:13 Grand Rapids, Mi job briefing with the RN Dispatcher: CSX engines #69 + #4008 & 140 cars (70 loads + 70 empties) @ 10,957 tons & 7,548 feet long. He’s about to start doubling up his train & will have work in Lansing.

L303-03 @ 13:09 told Dispatch they moved 15 feet & had gone into Emergency inside the Grand Rapids Terminal. Y197 crew is assisting them to find the pull apart. L303 has a 10,957 ton train today. At 13:30 their air is pumping up & will then move eastward to Godfrey mp CG 0.99 to make sure all is ok & then the conductor will be taken up to the engine. At 13:53, L303 on the move eastward & reported from Madison mp CH149.7
L303-03 @ 14:03 reported stopped at mp CH148.7 with his 2nd engine cutting in & out. They're calling the Mechanical Dept. He has CSX engines #69 + #4008 & 140 cars.
In the end, L303-03 only ran with 96 cars with 1 engine a few hours later.
