"You can just be going on the road, some guys can just come and start harassing you. There are some shops where we go to purchase something, they would say we are not selling just because you are black."

"I (feel) scared a lot around. I scare so much you know. If I have a friend's birthday, I cannot go at night because I used to (get) scared. So many auto men (auto rickshaw drivers) you know, they abused us, they would just abuse us in their language."

"They (African residents) make noises, our sleep gets disturbed, our children's sleep gets disturbed, their studies gets disturbed. They (African residents) start urinating wherever they are standing (on the roadside). This is just in the daytime, leave aside what happens at night. The moment they get out of a taxi they enter a street and start to urinate. They drink beer all day, wherever they get down (from the taxi), they urinate."

"They shout loudly while (standing) in the street, dress in a certain way - we feel bad about it."

"I think the security there (in the neighbourhood), they should beef up the security there. There should be more security there, there should be more (police) patrol in the night so that they can see what is going on there. Because if they can't see (the attacks at) the time it will happen, there should be security there. Once there is security I think the people care because Indian people, we find they have respect for the policemen, the men in uniform, when they see police it will be difficult for them to act, when they see the police people around."

STORYLINE:
The death of a Congolese student who was assaulted and beaten to death in New Delhi recently has brought into focus the alleged racial discrimination faced by African nationals living in India.
Hundreds of thousands of Africans live in India, drawn by better education and work opportunities.
For them rampant racism is a daily battle in a country where their dark skin places them at the lower end of a series of strictly observed social hierarchies.
The daily indignities Africans suffer usually go undocumented both by the police and local media.
Landlords shun Africans in all but the poorest neighbourhoods, and in those they are charged unusually high rent.
African students in the New Delhi neighbourhood of Chhatarapur reported paying 15,000 rupees (225 US dollars) a month for a single room and bathroom that would normally rent for 6,000 to 7,000 rupees.
They said strangers point to them and laugh - or gang up and assault them.
