What is a 404: page not found error?

There is actually a popular story behind the origin of 404.

As per the story, back in the day when the world wide web was still the internal network of CERN, the central database was located on the 4th floor of a building in room 404.

File requests were handled manually. And if the requested file was not found then the message id: “Room 404: file not found” was sent.

When the database was automated message id was updated and room was dropped resulting in just "404: file not found”. Which we still see today.

What a cool back story.

This is actually a popular myth and there is no room 404 at CERN.

404 is actually an error of the 4xx client error class. The xx part defines the particular error, which in this case is 04.
