Have you ever asked “How often have you...?” Careful, it's not the same as "Wie oft hast du?". Tell us, do you find this distinction confusing?
In this video the (often) false friends Oft and Often are discussed.
To be fair and for the sake of accuracy, the German word Oft can refer to both frequency and total number of times. It’s the English word Often which is limited. Often is limited to frequency or “Häufigkeit”. 'Often' in English is never used to represent a simple number of events and answering 'how often?' needs to be done with a number accompanied by a unit of time.
Perhaps the fact that Oft and Often are often synonymous makes it even more confusing.
