Why I left the USA to retire in Thailand. My expat life in Chiang Mai 2024.

There are five main reasons I decided to retire in Thailand and leave America. The decision to become an expat in Chiang Mai, Thailand was not an easy one. I’m making this video in 2024 but my first trip to Chiang Mai was eight years ago, and the move to the expat life was gradual. Why did I decide to leave the USA and retire in Thailand? America is a great country, but it does not feel like the country I grew up in. The biggest factor for me though was wanting a sense of adventure. My life in the USA had become predictable and boring. I wanted more. I settled on Chiang Mai, Thailand because not only does my girlfriend live and work here, but my daughter moved here right out of college and Thailand is her permanent home. I visited Bangkok several times, and looked into Phuket, Pattaya and Koh Samui as expat-friendly locations, but I settled on Chiang Mai. This was due to its casual and laid back feel, cooler temperatures, and its sense of history with so many temples.

And if you want diverse, super affordable, great restaurants and coffee shops, Chiang Mai is the place. Also, I find the local Thais here even friendlier than in other parts of Thailand. There is a greater feel of relaxation and trust than I feel in other regions of Thailand, particularly tourist regions and metropolitan areas like Bangkok and Pattaya.

Of particular interest may be when I talk about if I found the change I wanted in each area of my life, or did I just find the same problems, or new problems, in Thailand. I will speak very honestly and I believe you will hear many things you will not hear from other Thailand vloggers.
