Yokai Tattoo Time Lapse: Japanese Inspired Art In Progress

We shot a time-lapse video of a Yokai Japanese tattoo in the studio yesterday.

Yokai is a term from Japanese Folklore; they can take many forms, like animals, humans or various other objects and are quite often shapeshifters.

The word Yokai means Ghost, monster or spirit.

Like every other aspect of Japanese mythology, which is rich symbolic meaning from the Edo period and before, The one subject of Yokai can be studied for a lifetime. The study of Yokai is so vast it is also known as yokaioligy; there are books on this subject.

Not just an evil spirit, Yokai can also be Mischievous, playful and often helpful to Humans.

The more common Yokai are the Oni, Kappa, Tengu, Kasa obake, Hannya, and Tanuki to name a few, All Yokai have unique traits and different meanings, Their imagery can be traced back more commonly to the Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo Period and old ghost stories all the way up to common day manga movies like Spirited Away.
