At least 15 people, including six men and nine women, were killed in a tragic accident when a bus toppled down a 1,000-foot slope along the Ella–Wellawaya main road last night (04) around 9.00 p.m.

Police said the accident occurred between the 23rd and 24th kilometre posts in the Ella Police Division, when the bus, travelling towards Wellawaya, collided with an oncoming jeep and the roadside iron fence before veering off the road.

The bus was carrying about 30 passengers, including municipal employees, returning from a picnic in Tangalle. Among the injured were six men, five women, three boys, and two girls, all of whom were admitted to the Badulla Hospital for treatment. Two bystanders who assisted in the rescue efforts were also hospitalised after sustaining injuries.

The bodies of the deceased have been placed in the morgues of Diyatalawa, Badulla, and Bandarawela hospitals. Police confirmed that the driver of the jeep involved in the accident has been arrested.

Ella Police have launched further investigations into the incident.
