It’s pretty easy to come up with a list of the best Stephen King movies. Stephen King adaptations like The Shining, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and Carrie are all excellent movies, but aside from the best Stephen King adaptations, there’s a much larger list of worst Stephen King movies. Some of these movies regarded as the worst Stephen King adaptations actually have some pretty incredible talent behind them, like George Romero, Tobe Hooper, and John Carpenter. Let’s start with the Stephen King movie by John Carpenter: Christine.

It’s not considered one of the best Stephen King movies, but honestly when it comes to bad Stephen King movies you could do a lot worse. It’s the story of a haunted car that’s become an icon when it comes to Stephen King cameos. She’s showed up in everything from The Dark Tower and 11/22/63 to Ready Player One and Regular Show, even though the Stephen King movie she’s in isn’t up there with the best Stephen King movies. It’s still got some tense action and atmosphere, and some awesome John Carpenter music. Now, when you’re talking about the worst Stephen King movies, you’ve got to talk about The Mangler. Stephen King wrote a very short story about a haunted laundry machine in 1972, and somehow that was enough to spawn three whole movies. Tobe Hooper directed the first film, and The Mangler has definitely earned its reputation as one of the worst Stephen King movies. But, if you’re up for some cheesy, gory fun, there are definitely worse Stephen King adaptations out there.

George A. Romero might have invented the zombie movie, but he has a mixed track record when it comes to Stephen King movies. Creepshow was an awesome horror anthology, but his follow-up The Dark Half almost killed his career. It was the last time George Romero got to direct a mainstream studio film, and its failure caused him to step away from movies for seven years. It’s not the best Stephen King movie, but it’s not the worst Stephen King movie either. Dreamcatcher, on the other hand, is one of the weirdest Steven King movies you’ll ever see. It’s astonishing how a cast that includes Timothy Olyphant, Jason Lee, Tom Jane, Damian Lewis and Morgan Freeman were involved in a movie this bizarre. It’s so weird that it must be seen to be believed.

The final film in our list of the best worst Stephen King movies is King’s own Maximum Overdrive. The first and last time he stepped behind the camera, Maximum Overdrive is a wild and strange movie about machines that come to life and kill people. It’s so over the top that it’s become a campy cult classic, and a bad Stephen King movie you don’t want to miss. The Stephen King It movie 2017 might usher in a new era of best Stephen King movies. But before we make that call and put It 2017 on the list, you might want to watch these best worst Stephen King movies and see how they stack up to the terror of Pennywise in the new It movie 2017.
