You are bidding on a hand-shaped Koa Alaia from the hands of legend surfer and surfboard builder Mr. Greg Noll. Stunning. The Koa wood on this board is gorgeous, moves with the light, and draws your breath away. Long before European discovery, surfing played an important role in Hawaiian society, but the nature of that role varied according to class. For instance in pre-contact Hawaii the use of the long and narrow Olo surfboards was strictly limited according to the system of traditional law (Kapu) to the hereditary ruling class. The commoners on the other hand were restricted to the shorter wider and thinner, reliable boards. The Alaia boards were better suited to manoeuvring on the waves while the Olo boards were more capable of catching waves on the outer peaks that formed far from shore and allowed rides of prodigious length. Varying descriptions of the techniques of the early surf writing may be traced to this difference in the vehicles and craft in the style of surfing appropriate to each. Greg Noll worked with any number of select or "Royal" woods -- Koa being among them. Inscribed in Sharpie "Shaped by Greg Noll 2001". A 9 out of 10. Some very minor "resin fogging" along the rails --see image for example.
