Welcome back to Universally Me where we dive into the history of Universal Studios, and the people, places, and movies who made it what it is today. I'm Antonia Carlotta, and my Uncle Carl Laemmle started Universal Studios. He and his son Junior produced many of the monster movies we all know and love.
Universal was always a smart and innovative studio. Carl Laemmle created Universal City - the first and only entire movie making city where people lived and worked together. Carl Laemmle created the idea of the movie star, with Florence Lawrence and some wild publicity stunts he planned around her. He invented the movie studio tour. He was a master of publicity. And under his leadership, Universal made some amazing silent films.
Though Carl Laemmle and Junior Laemmle both had brilliant minds, it took some trial and error to make the transition from silent film to sound. My favorite early success is the story of Junior making an entire movie in just a weekend! But there's so much to the story of Universal's transition than that.
