This may not be full-on spooky material for Halloween, but hey, it does mention the gallows! Fortunately the protagonist is saved in the end, though.
I started to think, "What a terrible time to be alive, when the only thing standing between you and a death sentence was something as trivial as a sum of money." But while we may not be doling out capital punishment quite as freely as we did in centuries past, the way the justice system harshly punishes poor people even for lesser crimes, while still allowing rich people to litigate their way out of quite heinous ones, makes me feel we haven't evolved as much as we like to think we have.
Honestly, I think that's spookier than any paranormal ghost or ghoul one could dream up!
