Went for a sail on Hagg Lake outside of Portland, OR on 2000 Com-Pac Sun Cat 17. Light & variable winds with full sail and barely moving. Suddenly the winds came up strong and completely overpowered the boat (or me, since I've only been sailing a few months) I had to lower the sail and start the motor. I ducked into a small protected cove and set anchor. I decided to put 2 reefs in, mainly because i'd never sailed reefed before and did not know how much effect a single reef would have, that was my call. Went back out on the lake and had a ball the rest of the day. May have gotten away with a single reef but for a learning experience I think the double was the right call for me.
