Two young Confederate veterans, Dan Thomas (William Holden) and Tod Ramsey (Glenn Ford), head west to Texas in 1866 seeking fortune and a fresh start after the Civil War. When they witness a stagecoach robbery and decide to rob the robbers, the duo must split up to escape the law, leading them down divergent paths—Dan joins a ruthless cattle rustling gang led by a scheming dentist (Edgar Buchanan), while Tod becomes an honest ranch hand working for the very people Dan is stealing from, and both fall hard for the same spirited rancher's daughter Mike King (Claire Trevor), setting the stage for a showdown between friendship and the law.
