The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is a critically important species in the conservation world, recognized as one of the most endangered wild cats on the planet. Endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, it is found primarily in fragmented habitats across southern Spain and, more recently, in parts of Portugal due to successful reintroduction efforts. This solitary and elusive feline is instantly recognizable by its striking physical features, including a short, spotted coat, prominent black ear tufts, and a distinctive beard-like ruff of fur around its face. Despite its relatively small size, the Iberian lynx is a skilled predator, adapted to stealth and agility in dense Mediterranean scrubland. Once on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 100 individuals surviving in the early 2000s, the species has become a symbol of hope for wildlife conservation through intensive recovery programs, though it remains highly vulnerable.
